An eye. Pan out, slowly. The eye is wildly looking around, the face belonging to the eye is older, but smooth and almost infant like, it is familiar. He is now panicked, trapped on a slab of black metal and covered in wires and tubes. His gaze lands on an apparatus table next to him. There’s a man connected to it, also thrashing around in a bed of wires and tubes.

The other man looks over, and sneers. His eyes are yellow and full of fire, crackling with blue electricity. The men know each other.

There is a frantic race to escape, wires are torn and sparking, yellow bursts of flame and smoke fill the room.

A great roar, and the men are on each other in a visceral battle, bolts of pure blue energy leave great scars of ruin on the black metal room. The man with the yellow eyes prevails, lifting the original man in the air and slamming him against a huge storage rack. Yellow eyes turns around after one more lightning bolt of hatred and darkness.

Hundreds of small, floating black droids fill the room, adorning the man with yellow eyes with a thick black cloak. Beeps and whirls and flashing red lights, the man is picked up and carried out. He laughs a terrible, and evil, bellowing laugh.

The other man is ignored.

He is a smoking mess, and slowly, very slowly, he sits up. He looks at his hands, clenches them as if they were new. Does the same with his feet, they are fascinating to him. The contents of the metal rack is strewn around him, something catches his eye. A helmet, black as deep space, reflecting the light around him.

We recognize this helmet, as does the man. The man is looking at his reflection in his helmet, he whispers one word.

“Luke.”

Title booms in.

“Gangly Shanks was tall and thin, with a large hooked nose and a protruding Adam’s apple. For armor he favored an oversized iron-studded leather cuirass, which hung loose and heavy from stooped shoulders. With thinning hair, bulging eyes, and a wart on his cheek, Gangly Shanks was one of the ugliest guards in the Blackstone—but he was also one of the nicer ones. He might tell a joke or two when the others were not around. He would smile and laugh more than most. He almost never used his cudgel.

And he was especially kind to her. He knew her given name, and used it when he escorted her alone, even though it was forbidden. She once confided to him that she was fond of plums, so he would sometimes slip one into her dinner when no one else was looking. “For ya, Bai,” he would say quietly, adding a wink on rare occasions.

I am Bai, she remembered with a start.”

“The man with the half metal face put his hand on the exposed hilt of his sword. The sword he wore at his belt, as was common of knights and Americans, but this sword seemed to be much smaller than any Jeph had every seen. The sheath did not seem even as big as the hilt. Curious. Realizing what he had done, Metal Face quickly removed his hand, and smiled. Or, the live part of his face smiled, the lines around his mouth sinking into his face, making him look a lot younger than Jeph had originally thought. The smile was strangely natural on his face, friendly even.”
